María Cecilia (Mace) Ferrer is a visual artist and designer based between Detroit, Michigan, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. She merges her drawing practice with her ceramic practice to create utilitarian and sculptural pieces. In her work, illustrations often adorn the surfaces of her ceramics, and they also work as maps that guide her process of constructing forms and possible tools.
Through the exploration of different processes and materials, the artist tells stories of personal mythology inspired by her daily experiences, feminine archetypes, Caribbean culture and nature, climatic phenomena, life cycles, and the passing of time. Whether for daily or aesthetic use, María Cecilia mixes the craft of ceramics and technical rigor with exercising what she considers freedom and transformation.
Maria Cecilia received a BFA in Ceramics from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York, in 2015; and an MFA in Ceramics from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, in 2024. In 2020, she created the brand Ma Cerámica. Her work has been exhibited at Cranbrook Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD), Detroit, Michigan.
